Featured Home - Hidden River Ranch

Type of Project:

5,300 square ft. Single Family home with framing composed of reclaimed timber.

Year Built:

This is a 5-acre, river-front lot located on the East River, 5 miles south of the Town of Crested Butte, in Hidden River Ranch.

Standout Features:

This home was built with predominantly reclaimed timbers, hand hewn beams, oak and hickory barnwood.   These clients loved the look of natural stone (Colorado moss rock), and we used it wherever we could.  Our subcontractor, Fernando and his team at Santos Stone and Masonry are excellent artisan masons and they specialize in these types of homes. The wide-planked chestnut floors were gorgeous, which were called out by the clients and Architect Pete Weber, who worked closely together to create this unique design.  The craftsmen of Crested Butte Builders also worked with clients on the fine details of the home, and they were able to make their own creative contributions, such as the intricate hand railings and joint details that will eventually be discovered over the years.

This home was featured in the 2014 issue of Peak Magazine, A Cabin by the Creek.

Unique Challenges:

The lot is fairly wet since it is adjacent to agricultural lands and pasture irrigations upland of the property.  Groundwater issues required engineering and installation of extensive drainage systems.  During the winter of construction, we had unusually heavy snowfall with weather conditions cold and wet along the river drainage, along with heavy, drifting snow. Timber framing with hand-hewn beams is difficult because the beams are not square, they are heavy, and they are old. These particular challenges are not uncommon in the Crested Butte area.  (But it is certainly nice to have a warm, mild winter for building!)
